And now for something completely different. The Animal x Terrible One tyre.
The Animal x Terrible One tyre is unlike any other BMX tyre we’ve seen. At first glance, it looks more like a road bike tyre or even a motorcycle tyre. It’s a dual compound tyre – hell, it’s a dual brand tyre! – and this blend helps create something magic.

Animal Bikes. Terrible One. Two legendary companies, pure BMX to the core, collaborating to make a tyre. Apparently, Joe Rich at T1 was a big fan of the Animal tyres but wanted to try and create something aimed specifically at dudes who ride fast on concrete. It took a few years, but the result is worth it… Just watch the promo video of Garrett Byrnes (below) for the evidence.
The top of the AT1 tyre is made of a harder compound, whereas the sides are softer. That means lower rolling resistance aka faster BMX riding when you’re going in a straight line, and more grip when you’re hitting the corners. Genius. The funny thing is, you can actually see the difference when you look at the tyre. The rubber has a different finish to it, as if it’s been worn in with a few hot laps of a bowl on a summer’s day. There’s also a noticeable edge to the tread. It’s so different, pleasingly different, we spent quite a while staring at these things!
Tread pattern wise, these are obviously quite simple tyres. There’s a groove down the middle… There are T1 logos recessed into the sides… And that’s it. You can choose the ‘Ursa Major’ or ‘Ursa Minor’ tyre, that’s 2.4” and 2.2” width respectively.
